Conditional vs unconditional call forwarding: which should you use?

Want your assistant to answer only when you are busy? Choose the forwarding condition carefully: forwarding every call and forwarding a missed call behave differently.

The difference in everyday use

Unconditional forwarding sends incoming calls to the destination without first giving you the normal chance to answer on your mobile. Conditional forwarding applies only when a condition is met, such as no answer, busy or unreachable. Your carrier must support and activate the condition on the correct SIM.

For example, if you want to answer family calls normally but have someone take a message during a meeting, no-answer forwarding is a starting point to discuss with your carrier. It still applies to every caller who meets that condition, not just salespeople.

Does declining a call send it to the assistant?

Do not assume that declining a call and letting it ring unanswered use the same rule. A rejected call may follow the busy treatment, while a ringing call may follow the no-answer treatment. Call waiting, voicemail and carrier configuration can affect the result.

Test the two actions separately from another phone. First let a call ring without answering. Then make a new call and decline it. Check both where the caller lands and whether the assistant conversation appears in your own account.

Setting it up on an iPhone or a dual-SIM phone

Apple documents a Call Forwarding setting under Settings → Apps → Phone, with a line choice on supported dual-SIM devices. That setting alone is not evidence that busy or no-answer forwarding is configured. Apple directs users to their carrier for supported conditional forwarding.

Use only the destination assigned by the service you intend to use. Never enter a forwarding command supplied by an unsolicited caller claiming to fix your SIM or deliver a parcel. Ask your carrier about charges for the forwarded leg before enabling it.

A simple test before relying on it

Keep the cancellation instructions before switching anything on. Use a second phone to test normal answering, no answer, decline and any unreachable condition you enabled. Leave a harmless test message and check the correct account receives it. Do not use an urgent or sensitive call as the first test.

If you change carriers, SIMs or assistant services, test again. Deleting an app does not send a cancellation request to your mobile network.

Where LessRings fits

LessRings is being built to take short Hindi and English messages from eligible forwarded calls. It does not make carrier forwarding available on every plan, and no-answer forwarding does not stop your phone from ringing first. Public subscriptions are not open yet.
